How does a flow battery work?

A flow battery works by storing and releasing energy through an electrochemical process in which charged particles move between two liquids (electrolytes) that are stored in two external tanks.

The unique design of the battery allows the energy capacity and power to be adjusted independently of each other, which distinguishes it from traditional batteries such as lithium-ion.

What is the lifespan of VisBlue's battery solution?

Our battery solution has a lifespan of more than 20 years.

In theory, the life of the battery solution is infinite. In practice, however, this is not quite so.

The components of our battery solution also have a long service life, such as the plastic tanks, hydraulics and mechanics.

What are the technical specifications of VisBlue's battery solution?

VisBlue's battery solution is based on a vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB), which is the most mature redox flow battery technology.

Electricity becomes stored electrochemically by a change in the oxidation stage of vanadium redox species, which are dissolved in sulfuric acid and stored in separate tanks. During charging and discharging, the two solutions circulate through a flow cell, where the electrochemical energy is converted into electricity.

The basic chemical processes used in a redox flow battery are comparable to Li-ion batteries and lead-acid batteries. In Li-ion and lead, the electricity is stored in a solid material, where the electricity is stored in a liquid material in flow batteries.

Redox flow batteries can also be compared to fuel cells that use fuel/electrolytes other than O2 and H2.

Redox flow batteries have a high (70-90%) cyclic charge/discharge efficiency, depending on the operating and consumption pattern. One of the attractive features of redox flow batteries is the scalability between storage capacity and power, because these are two separate devices.

Compared to other redox flow batteries, vanadium redox flow batteries have the advantage that the cross-contamination of ions inside the flow cells is less than in conventional flow batteries, which means that the vanadium version has a much smaller self-discharge. This means that VRFBs, in principle, have an infinite lifespan. In practice, however, this is not possible as several factors come into play, such as a mechanical breakdown of the flow cells, which gives the battery a limited life.

Depending on the quality of the flow cells, the service life is expected to be 20+ years (>10000-20000 cycles).

Vanadium makes up about 30-50% of the battery's cost, and has a significant scrap value, which can be recycled in a new installation.

The lifetime of a VRFB is significantly higher than that of a standard Li-ion battery and lead-acid batteries, which, together with the low price, makes the flow battery an attractive investment over time.

Is vanadium polluting?

No.

Vanadium is considered non-harmful to the environment, and under normal exposure it is also not harmful to us humans.

Vanadium is metal number 23 in the periodic table and traces from it can be found in more than 100 different minerals.

The vanadium used in VisBlue's battery solution, vanadium dissolved in sulphuric acid and water, has a lifespan of more than 20 years. Once a battery has passed its useful life, or if it has been taken out of use, the vanadium in the battery can be regenerated and reused.

Is vanadium recyclable?

The vanadium used in VisBlue's battery solution, vanadium dissolved in sulphuric acid and water, has a lifespan of more than 20 years. Once a battery has passed its useful life, or if it has been taken out of use, the vanadium in the battery can be regenerated and reused.

The process takes place by removing and cleaning the vanadium liquid by means of filtration and evaporation.

Is VisBlue's battery scalable?

Yes, our battery solution is scalable and can be tailored to meet your needs and requirements.

This is possible because we can both design and arrange the desired number of VisBlue battery units to suit your specific needs and requirements. To determine energy needs, etc., we start with a precise calculation of specific needs and requirements, as well as expectations reconciliations.

Our calculations are achieved through an advanced simulation software that we ourselves have developed for this very occasion.

One of VisBlue's strengths lies in our ability to accurately calculate the needs, expectations and requirements of our customers, so that you can get the most optimal battery solution for your specific needs.

How much does VisBlue's battery solution cost?

It is difficult to give a standard price for our battery solution because our batteries differ in size (power and capacity).

VisBlue's battery solution is tailored to the specific customer to meet the energy requirements that the customer may have. Therefore, it also differs from battery to battery what the price is.

Please contact us if you have questions about price and size and/or you would like help figuring out if a battery makes sense for you.

What are the advantages of a VisBlue battery solution?

Big savings and cheaper electricity bill
Here at VisBlue, we are making the world greener.
Our batteries give you savings from day one.
With a VisBlue battery, you utilize much more of the power your renewables produce, resulting in a smaller purchase of power from the grid = cheaper electricity bill.
We are increasing the utilization rate of solar energy and making our batteries from recyclable material.

Scalable
Whatever the need, we can customize our battery to the exact capacity you need.
It is important to be environmentally conscious.

Long service life
Our batteries have a long life — much longer than other common battery types on the market.
Our battery has about 10,000-20,000 cycles (one cycle is a charge and discharge), which roughly gives the battery a lifespan of 20+ years.

Security
Our batteries are safe to install in densely built-up areas - indeed, they are safe to install everywhere.
The batteries consist of 80% water, 10-15% sulphuric acid and 5-10% vanadium, which means that, due to the high water content, they cannot burn or explode.

99% recyclable
Our batteries are 99% recyclable. It consists of parts that are easy to recycle and the battery itself is built up so that it is easy to disassemble and recycle.

Greener stream
Here at VisBlue, we are making the world greener.
We are increasing the utilization rate of solar energy and making our batteries from recyclable material.
A battery from VisBlue makes you use more of the power your renewables produce, resulting in a smaller purchase of power from the grid = cheaper electricity bill. By hedging against tax changes, VisBlue's customers buy less power from the grid and are therefore less exposed to the policy measures and changes in exports and taxes on surplus electricity.

Where is VisBlue placed?

VisBlue's head office is located in Aarhus, where we also have our production and development.

In our head office in Aarhus, we have a close cooperation with Aarhus University, which enables us to continuously improve our product, chemistry and development.

In addition, we have a small office in Porto, in Portugal, that supports our development. In Porto, VisBlue has a close relationship with the University of Porto.
